PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To obtain a composition which gives a cured coating film excellent in appearance and hardness and is excellent in storage stability by dispersing in an aqueous medium a compound which contains maleimido groups and is solid at a specified temperature. SOLUTION: The composition is formed by dispersing in an aqueous medium a compound (A) which contains maleimido groups and is solid at 30 deg.C, for example, an acrylic resin containing maleimido groups, having a softening point of 75 deg.C and obtained by reacting methyl methacrylate, n-butyl methacrylate and glycidyl rnethacrylate to give an epoxidized polymer and then reacting the obtained polymer with N-(5-carboxy)pentylmaleimide, or dispersing in an aqueous medium a composition which contains as the essential constituents a compound containing maleimido groups and a compound having C-C double bonds copolymerizable therewith and which is solid at 30 deg.C, or dispersing in an aqueous medium the compound A and a compound which has C-C double bonds copolymerizable with the compound A and is solid at 30 deg.C.
