<p>An artificial reef (10) which provides a habitat for small aquatic life and promotes phytoplankton growth (37) includes at least one tubular vehicle tire (12) with a wall (14) defining an exterior (16) and a hollow interior (18), oppositely situated sidewalls (20) interconnected by a treadwall (22) to provide a substantially U-shaped radial cross section (23), and at least one corrodible iron insert (24) in the form of a nail, staple, or other shape. Each insert (24) has a first end (26) extended into the hollow interior (18), a center (30) securely positioned through the wall (14), and a second end (28) extended externally of the exterior (16). The inserts (24) may have varying iron contents to control the rate of corrosion. The reef (10) may also include a weight (36), apertures (62), severed ends (40), or additional tires to submerge the reef (10) beneath the water surface (33). Various embodiments of the reef engage the seafloor (48), suspend from a floating structure (66), and suspend from a stationary structure (64).</p> |
