PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an anionic emulsifier capable of affording an emulsion improving emulsion polymerization stability during emulsion polymerization of monomers containing styrene and butadiene and mechanical stability of the emulsion as compared with those of a conventional emulsifier and having low viscosity and foaming and little malodor. SOLUTION: The anionic emulsifier (A) is represented by general formula (1) (wherein, m R are each independently a methylene group, an ethylene group or an ethylidene group; A is a 2-3C alkylene group; M<SP>+</SP>is an alkali metal cation, an ammonium cation or an amine cation; m is an average value and 1.0-3.0; and n is an average value and 1.0-8.0).
