A mail archiving system including a mail gateway server is provided to reduce the amount of archived mails considerably by selectively removing an abnormal mail. A mail server(300) transmits/receives an e-mail via the Internet(10). A mail gateway server(200) is installed at a front end of the mail server(300). An archiving server(400) receives a mail from the mail gateway server(200) for backup. The mail gateway server(200) includes a mail filtering unit for selectively filtering received mails, and a temporary storage unit for temporarily storing the filtered mails until it is deleted and temporarily storing a mail to be transmitted to the mail server(300) or the archiving server(400) when the archiving server(400) has an error.
