1425795 Preparing halogenated aromatic polyesters CELANESE 30RP 16 April 1974 [16 April 1973] 16633/74 Heading C3R A halogenated aromatic polyester is produced by reacting in solution, (a) an aliphatic monocarboxylic acid ester of a bisphenol of the formula where X is chlorine or bromine, Y is hydrogen, chlorine or bromine, the halogens being the same in any given compound and R and R<SP>1</SP> are hydrogen or C 1-6 alkyl or together form a cyclic hydrocarbon group, and (b) a mixture of terephthalic and isophthalic acids in which form 10 to 60 weight per cent of the mixture is terephthalic acid, at from 220‹ to 350‹ F. in the presence of, as catalyst, a cobalt, nickel or manganese salt of an aliphatic monocarboxylic acid. The catalyst is preferably present in an amount of from 0À0001 to 2% by weight based on the reactants. The examples describe reacting the above acid mixture with the diacetates of 4,41-isopropylidene bis - (2,6 - dichloro - phenol), 4,4<SP>1 </SP>- isopropylidene bis - (2 - chlorophenol), 4,4<SP>1 </SP>- isopropylidene bis - (2,6 - dibromophenol), 4,4<SP>1</SP> - isopropylidene bis - (2 - bromophenol) and 4,4<SP>1</SP> - cyclohexylidene bis - (2,6- dichlorophenol) and the dipropionate of 4,4<SP>1 </SP>- isopropylidene bis - (2,6 - dichlorophenol) using the following catalysts cobalt acetate, manganese acetate, nickel acetate and cobalt butyrate.
