PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To remove acetylene to the residual concentration in the order of ppb with inexpensive equipment by oxidizing acetylene in air at specified concentration by a catalyst before air is caused to flow in heat exchangers for cooling air and removing water and carbon dioxide in the heat exchangers. SOLUTION: Air 1 to be separated is fed to an air compressor 2 through a filter 1, and the air whose pressure has been elevated there is fed to a catalyst 3, for example, in which a palladium coating film is formed on an alumina carrier to oxidize acetylene at temperatures of 70-130 deg.C. Next, after the air from which acetylene has been removed is cooled by a recooler 4, it is fed to a pair of regenerative heat exchangers 5, 6 arranged in a cold box casing 11 wherein the flow direction therein is switchable to cool it to the dew point thereof and remove carbon dioxide and water from the air. And then, it is fed to a distillation column 10 provided with a pressure column 8, a main condenser 9 and a low pressure column 10 of a low temperature air separator similarly arranged in the casing 11 to catch and recover oxygen. |
