The invention relates to a novel process for the selective catalytic hydrogenation of polynuclear aromatics. It is characterised in that cobalt carbonyl compounds are used as catalysts and in that the hydrogenation is carried out at a temperature of above 210 DEG C and a heat pressure of 400 to 600 bar. A CO/H2 mixture or a hydrogen-transferring compound can be used as hydrogenating agent.
