The levelling control for the vehicle suspension has actuators on each wheel mounting to adjust the separate riding height of each suspension unit. A control system (SG) sets the riding height to either a normal setting (Hnorm) or to a transport setting (Htrans) with the latter setting ensuring maximum ground clearance for moving the vehicle e.g. on transporters. After transport the suspension is reset to normal. The suspension mode change is programmed into the control system by connecting a diagnostic unit (DG) to the diagnostic socket in the vehicle. This eliminates a special control circuit on the vehicle.
