In the case of valve bags, for example valve bags in which the valve is situated in a side wall beneath a closure seam and which, furthermore, are manufactured from a material with low intrinsic stiffness, it must be ensured that the valves are held open for pushing on the bags. The apparatus has a pivotable and displaceable spreading device (3) which has two spreading fingers (9, 10) and a pulling-on hook (11) which move into the valve after the bag has been singled out and at the same time the valve has been opened in a slot-shaped manner. As a result of the pivotability and displaceability of the spreading device, transfer of the bag to special pushing-on tools becomes unnecessary, so that the spreading device for pulling on the valve at the same time takes over the function of a pushing-on device. The apparatus can be used in particular for series packing machines. <IMAGE>
