Disclosed is an apparatus (100) for performing electrolysis and generating heat. The apparatus (100) includes an electrolysis cell (110) with a cell housing (111) defining an electrolyte cavity containing an electrolyte (113) in use and also includes a plurality of substantially parallel spaced apart electrode plates (115) provided within the electrolyte cavity and at least two connectors (116), which in use are connected to an electrical power supply thereby allowing an electrical current to be supplied to the electrolyte (113) to perform electrolysis and heating of the electrolyte (113). At least one cell outlet (125) coupled to a heat recovery module is in fluid communication with the electrolyte cavity, and at least one cell inlet (124) allows the electrolyte (113) to be supplied to the electrolyte cavity. The apparatus (100) also includes a trigger circuit coupled to the at least two connectors (116), a switch, and a load coupled to the at least two connectors (116) via the switch. The trigger circuit selectively activates the switch to thereby couple the at least two connectors (116) to the load. |
