PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To obtain a photographic spectral sensitizing dye having high sensitivity, less liable to cause a fog and residual color stain after processing and also having good photographic characteristics by using a dye having a specified acidic heterocycle as a substituent. SOLUTION: The photographic spectral sensitizing dye has an acidic heterocycle having a picolyl group or a group of the formula -NHCOR (where R is amino or pyridyl) as a substituent. The acidic heterocycle may be a thiazolidine ring, an imidazolidine ring or an oxazolidine ring. The dye is excellent when represented by formula I, formula II or the like. In the formulae I and II, Z1-Z3 are each a group of atoms required to form a 5- or 6-membered N-containing heterocycle, L1-L7 are each methine, R1 and R3 are each picolyl or -NHCOR2, R2 is amino or pyridyl, M1 and M2 are each a counter ion for neutralizing the electric charge of the molecule and (l), (m) and (n) are each an integer of 0-2.
