The use of a composition comprising an amino acid sequence which is at least 80% identical to the sequence set forth from amino acid 8 to amino acid 41 of SEQ ID NO:1 (the BAFF-R polypeptide or BCMA) or an antibody directed against SEQ ID NO:1 in the manufacture of a medicament fro inhibiting B-cell growth, inhibiting immunoglobin production, for inhibiting dendritic cell-induced B-cell growth and maturation, for treating autoimmune disease, for treating hypertension, for treating hypertension or for treating inflammation is described. Also described is pharmaceutical composition comprising a pharmaceutically acceptable carrier and at least one of a polypeptide comprising an amino acid sequence which is at least 80% identical to the sequence set forth from amino acid 8 to amino acid 41 of SEQ ID NO:1 or amino acid sequence which is at least 90% identical to the sequence set forth from amino acid 8 to amino acid 41 of SEQ ID NO:1, or an amino acid sequence which is at least 80% identical to the sequence set forth from amino acid 1 to amino acid 51 of SEQ ID NO:1, or an amino acid sequence which is at least 90% identical to the sequence set forth from amino acid 1 to amino acid 51 of SEQ ID NO:1 or an antibody directed against SEQ ID NO:1.
