An electric supercharger 1 comprising an electric motor and a radial flow compressor 3 including a compressor wheel 5 arranged to be driven by the electric motor, an upstream inlet pipe 7, and an outlet housing 9 including a volute 11 arranged to receive compressed air leaving the compressor wheel. The outlet housing 9 is shaped such that the volute is located on the downstream side of the compressor wheel, such that the inlet, impeller and volute are axially spaced from each other. The volute may comprise a scroll 12 having a rectilinear cross-sectional profile. The arrangement of the volute may allow for more compact supercharger construction.
