In the invention as applied to a garter 15, a piece of elastic webbing &c. is folded longitudinally and the free ends brought together and secured preferably by zig-zag stitching 21 and rubber solution or latex. The outer fold 20 is provided with spaced transverse pockets 25 for the reception of stiffeners, e.g., whalebone, celluloid or metal. The stiffeners are inserted through an upper slit 28 which is narrower than the pocket itself. Fig. 5 shows a section through a pocket 25, of longitudinally elastic and substantially transversely inelastic webbing suitable for making the garter, and including longitudinal rubber threads 16, longitudinally extensible fibre threads 17 and transverse threads 18. In making girdles of two-way and or one-way stretch fabric, strips of fabric made as above described are applied at the top and/or bottom edges.
