A backfire dielectrically loaded antenna 1 comprises a core of dielectric material 12 located within a three dimensional antenna element structure 10 and a feed structure 14 in the form of an elongated circuit board extending through a passage 12B in the core 12. An impedance matching section 30 may be provided to couple the antenna elements 10 to a feed line 18. The circuit board 14 may be a multiple layer laminated board including at least a feed transmission line possibly with a elongate conductor 18 located between two conductive shield layers 16. Also disclosed is a radio communication apparatus comprising an antenna 1 connected to a radio communication circuit. The antenna 1 comprising a core of dielectric material 12 located within an antenna element structure 10 with a trap element connected at one end region of the core 12 and a feeder structure 14 extending through the said core 12 to be connected to the antenna elements 10 at another end region of the core 12. The said circuit and antenna provide a first frequency band fundamental circular polarization resonant mode and a second frequency band fundamental linear resonant mode where the second frequency band is higher than the first frequency band. |
