Provided are a method and a device, whereby the front and rear of a target component can be determined by using air pressure, said component having different degrees of flatness and smoothness on the front and rear thereof and having either the front or rear thereof coming in contact with a supporting surface of another member, when in a free state. The component front/rear determination method determines the front and rear of a target component having a difference in flatness and smoothness between the front and rear thereof and comprises: a (determination) preparation step in which the target component is placed upon a front/rear determination table, said front and rear surface placement being random; an air pressure action step in which an air pressure action disc is caused to come in contact with an upper surface of the target component that is not in contact with the front/rear determination table and air pressure is caused to act inside said air pressure action disc; an air pressure detection step in which air pressure inside the air pressure action disc wherein air pressure is acting is detected; and a front/rear determination step in which the front/rear of the target component is determined on the basis of the size of the detected pressure.
