A method is proposed for the conversion of nitrate or nitrite ions in an aqueous solution to gaseous products. The method comprises the introduction of the solution to be treated into an electrochemical cell, which consists of at least one anode andat least one cathode that consists of bismuth. The electrodes are connected between them by a current or potential source. The anode area is separated from the cathode area by a cation-exchange membrane. The method may be applied in the treatment oflow-radioactivity waste from the nuclear industry, which waste contains a high concentration of nitrate and nitrite ions, as well as in the treatment of the waste produced during the regeneration of ion-exchange resins, which waste contains nitrate ions in a solution of sodium chloride and/or sodium hydrogen carbonate. The solution obtained after the reduction of the nitrate ions can be fed to the anode, so that the produced ammonia is oxidised and the solution can be re-used as a regeneration solution. |
