PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a mask cleaning method in a screen printing machine that prevents paste on a mask cleaner side from entering a non-cleaning region set as a region where a lower surface of a mask is not cleaned, and to provide the screen printing machine.SOLUTION: In a region setting step of setting a cleaning region S1 where the lower surface of the mask 15 in contact with an upper surface of a substrate 2 is cleaned and the non-cleaning region S2 where the lower surface is not cleaned, if the non-cleaning region S2 is set, a mask cleaner 18 is moved in a direction getting away from the non-cleaning region S2 and thereby the cleaning region S1 is cleaned.
