PROCESS FOR THE PREPARATION OF 6-HYDROXY-2, 5, 7, 8- TETRAALKYL-2-(4-AMINOPHENOXYMETHYL) CHROMANS

A process for the preparation of aminochroman of the general formula I where R is a lower alkyl group having 1 to 4 C atoms, is described. In this process, nitrochromanone of the general formula II is reduced using zirconium oxide/isopropanol to produce a mixture of a corresponding aminochromene III and a corresponding nitrochromene IV This mixture is then hydrogenated with hydrogen in the presence of a hydrogenation catalyst to produce the final product, of the general formula I. Aminochroman is an important intermediate in the preparation of hypolipidaemic pharmaceuticals.
