A method of automatically allocating work in a distributed computing system having a plurality of nodes, the method being executed within the distributed computing system to improve the operation thereof, the method comprising: providing a data structure in an least one of the nodes of the plurality of nodes; inserting one or more records in the data structure, each of the one or more records associated with a unit of work of a particular service type and each of the one or more records including an identifier of the particular service type and an identifier of a first node in the plurality of nodes; determining that a worker on a second node should take over a particular unit of work of the first service type from the first node; modifying the record representing the particular unit of work by replacing the identifier of the first node with an identifier of the second node.
