The present invention relates to a system for cooling water, with the cooled water being used to subsequently cool a flow of air that is supplied to a building. The system employs both a stand alone, conventional, evaporative cooling tower and a night sky cooler that takes advantage of the radiative cooling effect of the night sky to more effectively produce passively cooled water that can then be used to cool the building. The same system can also be used to heat the building depending on the relative temperature difference between the water and the air that is supplied to a building. When the system is used for cooling, water is evaporatively cooled via a cooling tower, the cooled water is then circulated, along with a flow of building supply air, through a heat exchanger disposed within the system thereby enabling the flow of air to transfer heat to the cooled water as the air and water flow through the heat exchanger. When the system is used for heating, warmed water that has been stored in a storage tank is circulated, along with the flow of building supply air, through the heat exchanger disposed within the system thereby enabling the flow of air to absorb heat from the warm water as the air and water flow through the heat exchanger. |
