497,819. Mercury switches. BRITISH THOMSON-HOUSTON CO., Ltd. March 14, 1938, No. 7884. Convention date, March 12, 1937. [Class 38 (v)] A liquid contact circuit-closer is rotatably supported by contacts which engage its opposed terminals, and are held in position by a handle connected with the circuit closer. The circuit closer comprises two opposed cup-shaped metal terminals 1 constituting two mercury containing spaces separated by an insulating diaphragm having a hole through it, which when the circuit closer is rotated, falls below the mercury level and allows mercury to flow through it and complete the circuit. The circuit closer is supported by two contacts 12, spherical projections 16 of which engage complementary depressions in the terminals 1, which contacts 12 are held in position by the side walls 24 of a hemispherical handle 18. The contacts 12 are mounted on an insulating disc 8 and fixed by lugs 14 and 15, the disc being held in a cylindrical housing 6 having nuts 7 on its outside screwed surface to facilitate its being secured to a support. An internal spherical surface 25 of the housing engages the handle and prevents its removal. Two arcuate members 20 of insulating-material connect the handle 18 non-rotatably to the circuit closer, lugs on members 20 engaging depressions in the handle 18 and the terminals 1. |
