LEDs 103 are attached to a temporary handle substrate 104 using a thermally sensitive adhesive. The LED electrical contacts are coated with anisotropic conductive adhesive and aligned with contacts 107 arranged on a flexible substrate 106. The adhesive layers are cured by heating to form electrical connections between the LEDs and the flexible substrate, and at the same time applied pressure and heating cures the LED adhesive connections to the flexible substrate while the heat causes the handle substrate to simultaneously release the LEDs. Lens and/or diffuser layers may be laminated onto the flexible substrate to manufacture a large area light source. The surface mounting method is compatible with roll to roll manufacturing. |
