The process monitors at least one operating characteristic of a rotating element of a rotating machine. The operating characteristics can include velocity, acceleration, temperature, etc. The process stores the monitored current value for each operating characteristic. An alarm threshold is determined by a preprogrammed threshold. The process compares the monitored current value with the preprogrammed threshold to determine if an alarm condition should be indicated. The device establishes a measurement schedule retaining the device in a sleep mode and pulsing a condition investigation in accordance with a frequency. The frequency increases when approaching or exceeding an alarm condition. The device indicates an alarm condition by illuminating an alarm indicating light when the threshold has been exceeded.

A method of monitoring a condition of at least one rotating component of a rotating machine, the method comprising steps of: installing a machine condition indicating sensor and monitoring device onto a rotating machine, the device comprising: a sensor housing comprising a base subassembly and an upper enclosure,a printed circuit assembly comprising components assembled to a printed circuit board defining an operational circuit, the components include a microprocessor, a digital memory component, a portable power supply, at least one condition sensor, and an instruction set, wherein the instruction set directs operation of the circuit by the microprocessor; obtaining at least one data point consisting of at least one operating characteristic of the respective rotating component to determine at least one current value of the at least one operating characteristic; providing a pre-programmed threshold stored within the memory component, wherein the pre-programmed threshold assigns a maximum value to at least one of the operating characteristics; storing the at least one current value within the memory component; monitoring each respective at least one operating characteristic of the rotating component during operation of the rotating machine; comparing one of the at least one stored current values against the pre-programmed threshold to determine if one of the at least one data points is one of approaching an alarm condition and exceeding an alarm condition; and based upon the output of the comparison between the currently obtained value and the respective stored threshold maximum, proceeding with one of: in a condition where the currently obtained value is less than the pre-programmed threshold, the machine condition indicating sensor and monitoring device continues to monitor conditions of the respective rotating component, and in a condition where the currently obtained value is greater than the pre-programmed threshold, the machine condition indicating sensor and monitoring device indicates an alarming condition.
