The present invention relates to a method and an apparatus for operating a near field communication function (NFC) in a portable terminal capable of blocking NFC application execution or application execution for an NFC tag according to the restriction or permission for the searched NFC tag when the NFC tag is searched in the portable terminal in which the near field communication (NFC) function is loaded. The method for operating the NFC function in the portable terminal comprises a process for detecting the NFC tag during the execution of a specific mode; a process for comparing the NFC tag with predetermined lists; a process for omitting read operation for the NFC tag when the NFC tag is included in a blocking list; and a process for reading the NFC tag when the NFC tag is included in an application mapping list.
