A sliding clasp fastener stringer comprises a fabric tape 10, a single plastics filament carried by the tape and presenting a series of closely paced and aligned open loop portions along the tape edge, said filament terminating a substantial distance from one end of the tape in an end portion 16, which is positioned against the tape and which extends to a point close to said tape edge, and means for securing said filament to the tape comprising a line of stitching 15 passing through the tape and over the loop portions, over said filament end portion and continuing through the tape beyond said portion, said filament end portion being fused to said tape and stitching to anchor it firmly in place without materially affecting the flexibility of the adjacent loop portions. As described the method of fusing the filament end portion to the tape consists in inserting a rigid pin 24 into a plurality of the open loop portions adjacent the cut end portion while supporting the stringer against a die surface 22 and then applying concentrated pressure and heat in the region of the cut end portion of the filament to fuse the latter into the stitching and tape, the heat and pressure being applied by an ultrasonic horn (not shown). The end portions of the two stringers of a fastener are fused, to the corresponding tape simultaneously a second pin 23 being provided for the second stringer. The pins 23, 24 extend from a block 25 which has stop shoulders 26 and 27 so that the heads of the endmost complete loop portions abut against them with the pins projecting into the plurality of open loop portions; the filaments rest on the die surface 22 while their heads 14 bear against a tongue 28 which projects from the block 25 centrally between the pins 23 and 24 so as to maintain the end portion of each filament in a straight line. In one form each pin passes to one side of a respective cord 13 "which passes through the loop portions but in a modification the cord is removed in the region of the corresponding pin. |
