Light-weight cases are formed by cutting blanks from a flat sheet of material, pressing each blank between a stamper member and a die, and depositing each case so formed through the die on to conveyer means forming part of a production line in which the cases are used. The invention is particularly suitable for stamping crimped baking cases from a continuous sheet of greaseproof paper or foil laminate, the cases being deposited directly on to an oven sheet which is conveyed through a filling station to the oven. Fig. 1 illustrates apparatus in which a blank 24 has been cut from continuous sheet 16 by a rotary cutter 12, which is subsequently retracted from the cutting table 14. A stamper member 18 forces blank 24 through a hole 22 in table 14 into die 20, Fig. 2 (not shown); the stamper 18 is formed of a truncated cone 34 and a pusher 36, and the cone 34 is also partially retracted, while the pusher 36 deposits the case (30), Fig. 3 (not shown), into a recess 28 of an oven sheet 26 carried on an intermittent conveyer 32. The complete stamper member 18 then returns to its initial position, and the sheet 16 is fed forwards again. A number of such stamping units may be mounted side-by-side to operate simultaneously across an oven sheet, Fig. 4 (not shown). The stamper and the die may be heated. Rotary cutter 12, cone 34 and plunger 36 are generally mounted on hollow concentric shafts connected to camshafts or crank-shafts which control their operating cycles independently (not shown). The die 20 is normally open-ended, but may, alternatively, have a closed lower end which is moved aside to allow each case to be deposited below the die. The die may also be split into sections which could be opened up for use with non-resilient cases. |
