PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To accurately detect failure occurring in a generator excitation device.SOLUTION: There is provided a failure detection device 11 of a generator excitation device 21 that rectifies an AC output of an AC exciter 22 by a rectifier 23 and supplies a DC current to a generator field winding 8. The failure detection device 11 is electrically connected between the rectifier 23 and the generator field winding 8 via slip rings 4 and 5 and brushes 5 and 6. The failure detection device 11 comprises at least: waveform observation means for observing a waveform of a field voltage; and failure detection means for detecting various types of failure occurring in the generator excitation device 21 on the basis of at least a change in the number of waves per one cycle or a change in an interval of continuous waves of the waveform of the field voltage observed.
