The insulating member 1 comprises an elongate longitudinal U shaped hat channel 3 comprising a back plate 7 and a pair of side walls 9, 11, each of the sidewalls having a flange 13, 15 along its length extending laterally outwards. The back plate has a cuboid or other shape block of insulating material 5 mounted on the outer side of the channel. In use the insulating member is mounted vertically. Preferably the channel is formed from a flat sheet having a number of fold lines 17, 19, 21, 23 cut into the material which are subsequently bent to form the member. The width of the block may be greater than the width of the back plate. The sheet may be made from extruded polypropylene and the insulating material may be EPS, PIR or phenolic insulating material. The invention is used to surround vents and act as a sleeve or jacket cladding the vent without requiring cutting out a channel in a block of insulating material.
