Brominated a -alkyl- or -cycloalkylamino-anthraquinone is made by treating an anthraquinone of the formula in which R is alkyl, hydroxyalkyl or cycloalkyl and X is hydrogen, alkylamino or cycloalkylamino, with bromine wherein the bromination is conducted in aqueous hydrochloric acid of at least 20% strength. One bromine atom enters the anthraquinone nucleus in the para-position to each amino group, even when excess bromine is used. The products are dye intermediates.
