Abstract The Pole Switch Automation Unit (PSAU) is designed to be retrofitted to existing manually operated 11-33kV pole mounted switches. These pole mounted switches are used primarily by Power Distribution Utilities to isolate sections of the distribution network to repair faults or perform augmentation work. These switches are historically manually operated and require crews to be called to respond to faults to isolate the faulty area before work can be performed or load can be restored. This may take several hours. The PSAU allows the 24/7 manned control room to remotely operate the pole switches allowing the fault to be isolated and load restored to the non-faulted line segments within minutes of the fault occurring. A Line Fault Indicator (LFI) installed as part of the PSAU reports the faulted section of the distribution feeder to the control room, allowing decisions to be made on isolation and restoration.
