<p>The antibiotic, (-) (cis-1,2-epoxypropyl)phosphonic acid, is prepared by aerobic culture of a Streptomyces sp. in aq. medium in the presence of a cobalt salt. Pref. cobalt chloride is added to the medium in amount of 0.0025-0.075 g/l, pref. 0.0010 g/l of medium. The function of the cobalt salt is to increase the concn. of the antibiotic in proportion to the total quantity of solid substances in the bouillon. The pref. Streptomyces is a strain of S. fradiae, but strains of S. wedmorensis and of S. viridochromogenes are also effective. The antibiotic is used in pharmaceutical and veterinary preparations against gram +ve and gram -ve bacteria, specifically E. coli, Salmonella schottmuelleri, S. gallinarum, Proteus spp., and Staph. aureus.</p> |
