摘要 The reproduction of Penicillium notatum and consequently the production of penicillin is accelerated by suspending P. notatum in an aqueous solution containing lactose, corn steep liquor, glucose, NaNO3, KH2PO4 and MgSO4 and subjecting the culture to cavitation by means of sonic energy at 20 kilocycles per second at a level of 2.2 watts per c.c. of the mixture and temperature of 70 DEG F.-75 DEG F. for 20 hours and thereafter at 2,5 watts per c.c. for 10 hours. Ergosterol is produced in increased yield by suspending Saccharomyces cerevisae in an aqueous solution containing glucose, beef extract and sodium chloride and subjecting the culture to cavitation by means of sonic energy at 21 kilocycles per second with a power input of 4,5 watts per square inch of surface radiating the sonic energy for five hours at 85 DEG F.ALSO:The reproduction of micro-organisms is accelerated by incorporating the organisms in a liquid nutrient medium to form a culture liquid and subjecting the culture liquid to sonic energy at a frequency below 50 kilocycles per second and at a power level sufficient to effect cavitation of the culture liquid but insufficient to disrupt the cell structure of the micro-organisms. The temperature of the culture liquid is maintained substantially at a level most favourable to the growth and reproduction of the micro-organisms and the power level of sonic energy is increased after the number of micro-organisms in the culture liquid has substantially increased. The examples relate to the reproduction of (a) Penicillium notatum using sonic energy at 20 kilocycles per second at a level of 2.2 watts per c.c. of mixture for 20 hours and then 2.5 watts per c.c. for 10 hours at a temperature of 70-75 DEG F.; (b) Acetobacter suboxydans as in (a); (c) Saccharomyces cerevis using sonic energy at 21 kilocycles per second with a power input of 4.5 watts per square inch and a temperature of 85 DEG F. to give increased production of ergosterol; and (d) Anacystis nidulans using sonic energy of 21 kilocycles per second with a power input of 4.5 watts per square inch of surface radiating the sonic energy and a temperature of 100 DEG F.
