Provided is a microtome which ensures cleaning thereof and conducting other work therewith without interference with refrigerant piping and electrical wiring. The microtome includes: a head (32) for holding a sample; an alignment mechanism (50) for aligning the head (32); a body portion (42) provided on the rear side of the alignment mechanism (50); a tubular coupling section (41) for coupling between the body portion (42) and the head (32); a temperature controller (34) inside the head (32); and refrigerant piping (40) and electrical wiring (46) for the temperature controller (34). The alignment mechanism (50) has a spherical member (68) which is coupled to the rear side of the head and has a spherical outer circumferential portion, and retainer portions (70, 71) for slidably retaining the outer circumferential portion of the spherical member (68) on the spherical surface. The spherical member (68) includes a through hole (74) formed to communicate with a hollow portion (43) of the coupling section (41). The refrigerant piping (40) and the electrical wiring (46) are connected to the temperature controller (34) inside the head (32) through the through hole (74) of the spherical member (68) and the hollow portion (43) of the coupling section (41).
