A manual propulsion module, installed in matching pairs of such modules meets all the motive requirements of a manually-propelled invalid wheelchair, including propulsion, propulsive steering and immobilisation. It is furnished with a low-gear facility for ascending inclines. With minor adaptations a single such module may be used to propel a small boat. The module is configured for manufacture as a stand-alone component to procure the economic advantages of high- volume automated production. It allows flexibility in wheelchair design and layout. Advantages over the push-rim propulsion method, still the predominant means of manual wheelchair propulsion, are physiological and constructional, the module allowing a fixed grasp on a conveniently placed handle, a pulling action in forward drive, and suitable gearing to match the propulsive effort required to the user's capabilities. Used in a small boat, the module permits partial or full enclosure of the boat.
