Automatic coupling for railway vehicles with side buffers

The coupling has side buffers (7, 8) for accommodating pressure forces, and coupling halves comprising a coupling head (4) and connected with a traction device (5) for transmission of traction forces on a vehicle box of a rail vehicle. A clamping device is provided between the coupling head and the vehicle box. A length adjustment between the coupling head and the vehicle box and clamping force are produced during a coupling process. The clamping device has piston/cylinder units (14, 15) with a multi chamber system.
