<p><P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To attain a character input method for efficiently inputting characters through the use of a remote controller in a television receiver, etc., that does not have a keyboard. <P>SOLUTION: Input characters are classified into a plurality of character groups; a character input screen to be displayed on the television receiver, etc., is divided into a first hierarchical character display screen and a second hierarchical display screen; a representative character input button group of each character group is displayed on the first hierarchical character display screen; and the character input button group by each character group is displayed on the second hierarchical character display screen. A touch pad is arranged in the remote controller, so as to perform selection of the input button within the first hierarchical character display screen, display of the second hierarchical character display screen, and selection of the input button through the use of the trajectory of a finger sliding on the touch pad.
