PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a printer which can appropriately detect a tape type of a tape cassette loaded in a cassette housing portion without enlarging an apparatus size. SOLUTION: A lever 16 rotates rearward centering a lever shaft following closure of a cover of the printer. A release rod 17 moves in the left direction following the rotation of the lever 16. A roller holder 18 oscillates in the rearward direction following the movement of the release rod 17 in the left direction, and also a platen roller 15 is pressed in touch with a thermal head. A sensor holding portion 19 moves rearward following the movement of the release rod 17 in the left direction, and a switch terminal 231 is pressed in touch with an index portion of the tape cassette 30.
