4-Hydroxy-5,5-pentamethylene-3-phenyl-delta 3>-dihydropyrrol-2-one or -dihydrofuran-2-one derivatives (I) are new. The beta -isomer of 3-(4-chloro-2,3-trimethyl-phenyl)-4-ethoxycarbonyloxy-5,5-(3-allyloxy-pentamethylene)-delta 3>-dihydropyrrol-2-one (Ia) at a concentration of 20 ppm was 100% effective against Meloidogyne incognita nematodes on lettuce roots within 7 days.
