A gripping element (1) for gripping plastic containers with mouths, and in particular preforms, comprising a carrier (2) on which there is arranged a gripping head (4) which can be introduced at least partially into a mouth of the plastic container. According to the invention, arranged on the gripping head (4) is at least one holding element (6a, 6b, 6c, 6d, 6e) which is at least partially movable in a radial direction (R) in relation to the gripping head (4) to secure the container relative to the gripping head (4).
