PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To obtain a melting furnace capable of improving quick performance of downflow start and stop of molten glass from a downflow nozzle in a glass melting furnace. SOLUTION: In the glass melting furnace which has a melting furnace body in which molten glass is stored, a downflow nozzle which is set at the lower part of the melting furnace and communicates with the inside of the melting furnace body, a heating means for heating the downflow nozzle and a cooling means for cooling the downflow nozzle, wherein molten glass flows down from the downflow nozzle when the downflow nozzle is heated by the heating means and glass in the downflow nozzle is melted and the downflow of molten glass from the downflow nozzle stops when the downflow nozzle is cooled by the cooling means and glass in the downflow nozzle is solidified, the inner peripheral surface of the downflow nozzle is formed into a convexo-concave shape at the cross section of the downflow nozzle.
