Polymers containing 0,5 to 3,0 mols per cent of one or more units represented by the formulae: <FORM:0843501/IV(a)/1> <FORM:0843501/IV(a)/2> wherein R1 is H or CH3 and R is an aliphati hydrocarbon chain containing 12 to 18 carbon atoms and 2 represents atoms linking R to the polymer chain, the remaining units of the polymer being -CH2-CH(OH)- may be prepared by reacting polyvinyl alcohol with small amounts of compounds containing a functional group capable of reacting with the hydroxyl groups, or by copolymerizing a vinyl ester, such as vinyl acetate, with small quantities, of copolymerizable vinyl compounds followed by hydrolysis of the ester portions. Many suitable starting components are listed and preparations describe the reaction of polyvinyl alcohol with (1) palmitoyl chloride, (2) octadecyl isocyanate, (10) tetradecenyl succinic anhydride, and (11) palmitoyl myristoylethenone; polyvinyl acetate with (4) palmitoyl aminoacetal and octadecenyl aldehyde; and the copolymerising of vinyl acetate with (3) vinyl octadecyl ether, (5) allyl N-octadecyl carbamate, (b) allyl octadecyl ether, (7) allyl octadecyl urea, (8) N-allyl palmitamide and (9) N-octadecyl crotonamide, followed by hydrolysis. Copolymerization may be effected in bulk or in solvents, e.g. methanol, in the presence of catalysts, e.g. benzoyl peroxide and potassium persulphate. The products may be used in the preparation of photographic emulsions (see Group XX). Specifications 648,927, 649,544, 649,545 and 655,082 are referred to.ALSO:Alkenyl succinic anhydride derivatives of proteins may be prepared by reacting alkenyl succinic anhydride derivatives, e.g. dodecenyl succinic anhydride, tetradecenyl succinic anhydride, hexadecenyl succinic anhydride and octadecenyl succinic anyhdride, with proteins, e.g. bone glue, oxidised casein and oxidised soybean protein.
