<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a control technology for making an optical reflection effect and transmission effect suitable for cosmetic purposes. Ž<P>SOLUTION: The powder is obtained by coating the surface of barium sulfate with one or more kinds selected from titanium dioxide, zinc oxide, aluminum oxide, silica, zirconium oxide, iron oxide and compounded products thereof. The skin external preparation comprises the composite powder. Preferably the barium sulfate has a plate-like shape. The metal oxides and the compound oxides are preferably in a fine particle form.
