An identification system and method for medication management is disclosed. The system comprises a controller (24), a drug library accessible by the controller (24) and an identification module (26) configured to read machine-readable information. The drug library contains drug library profiles including a data set of drug information. Patient identification information is gathered from machine-readable identification devices (32) worn by patients (34). Drug information is gathered from machine-readable identification devices (28) affixed to drugs or the containers (30) of drugs. The controller (24) compares the read information to each other and to the drug library profile and provides alerts or error signals in the event of an inconsistency. In one case, identification devices are read by an optical reader (40) fixedly mounted to the identification module (26). In another case, identification devices (28, 36) are read by an optical reader that is hand-held and mobile and can be moved to the location of the identification device (28, 36). The hand-held reader communicates with the identification module (26) by wired or wireless means. In another case, a third reader that is non-optical and wireless is fixedly mounted to the identification module (26). The controller (24) is also configured to provide alerts or error messages in the event that there is an inconsistency between the drug information on the drug or drug container (30) when compared to the drug library profile associated with the controller (24). The controller (24) may also control the administration of a drug by way of an automatic syringe (22).
