The sump 1 of an engine is supplied with oil from a make-up tank 7 via a needle valve 6 controlled by a float 3. A chamber 17 communicates with the oil pump and the pressure therein raises a piston 10 to obturate a port 19 thereby preventing make-up when the engine is running. If the vehicle containing the engine is parked on an incline, a ball 13 rolls to the side of chamber 17 to prevent the piston lowering when the engine is switched off. In an alternative embodiment, the piston may be responsive to the output of the dynamo.</p> |
