PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an image forming apparatus which can accurately detect the position of an ink head in a maintenance unit. SOLUTION: The image forming apparatus 100 includes the ink head 11 which delivers ink liquid droplets from a nozzle surface, a carriage 21 carrying a plurality of the ink heads 11, an electric motor 18 which moves the carriage 21 guided by a guide rod 13, and a maintenance means 12 which maintains the function of the nozzle surface at the time of waiting while the carriage 21 waits at a reference position. The image forming apparatus 100 forms an image by delivering the ink liquid droplets to a recording member. The image forming apparatus 100 is characterized by having a detecting means 23 which is set in the maintenance means 12 and detects distance information between two or more ink heads 11 and the carriage 21 when the carriage 21 is moved in a direction of the maintenance means 12, a signal waveform detecting means 33 which obtains a signal waveform that includes characteristics obtained from an end of the ink head 11 by acquiring the distance information in time series, and a reference position determining means 36 which determines the reference position on the basis of the signal waveform.
