<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To inhibit an epithelial cytotoxic property due to benzalkonium chloride (BAC) contained in an external composition. Ž<P>SOLUTION: An inhibitor of the epithelial cytotoxicity with the BAC including one or more substances selected from the group consisting of an ampholytic surfactant and a polyoxyethylene hardened castor oil is provided. Furthermore, a BAC-containing external pharmaceutical composition (in particular, an ophthalmic solution) which lowly induces the epithelial cytotoxicity, and is obtained by formulating the substances, is provided.
