<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an error correcting apparatus capable of improving correction efficiency in error correction processing utilizing erasure correction, and to provide a data reader and an error correcting method. Ž<P>SOLUTION: An error correcting circuit 20 includes a determination circuit 23 for determining, on the basis of error position information indicating the position of an error caused in a left-side correction block, whether each of PI codewords in a right-side correction block is a burst error line on which occurrence of a burst error is inferred. The error correcting circuit 20 further includes a correction circuit 21 which sets an erasure flag for erasure correction in a PO direction to the PI codeword, in the right-side correction block, determined as the burst error line, and uses the set erasure flag to perform erasure correction in the PO direction to the right-side correction block.
