An apparatus and a method for reducing power consumption in a multi mode portable terminal are provided to operate a mobile communication unit when a paging channel of a mobile communication system is obtained through a broadband communication unit, thereby reducing power consumption of the portable terminal. A mobile communication unit(208) is a physical layer interface module for connecting to a mobile communication access network. A broadband communication unit(210) is a physical layer interface module for connecting to a broadband communication network. The broadband communication unit receives a paging channel. When a service is used through the broadband communication network, a controller(200) inactivates an operation of the mobile communication unit. When a paging channel is obtained of a mobile communication system through the broadband communication unit, the controller activates the mobile communication unit. |
