PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a shielded surgical scalpel to prevent inadvertent cuts or punctures. SOLUTION: The shielded surgical scalpel 10 includes an elongate handle 20 defining a longitudinal axis and having a proximal portion and a distal portion. A blade 30 is fixedly attached to the handle 20. The shield 40 is movable between a distal position where the shield 40 substantially prevents inadvertent access to the blade 30 and a proximal position where the shield 40 exposes the blade 30 for use.
